On June 13th at 2:30PM, the “2013 Summer Energy Conservation Campaign” launching event took place at Yongsan Station. Present at the day’s event were: Sang-Jik Yoon the Minister of the Ministry of Trade Industry and Energy, Jong-Lib Byun the Chairman of the Korean Energy Management Corporation, Jung-Sook Kim the President of the Korean National Council of Women and five different organizations including:GreenStart National Network, Korean SaemaulUndong Center, Korea NGO’s Energy Network, and the Korean National Council of Consumer Organizations.

Severe power shortages are expected this summer due to nuclear overlaps, the recent surge in electricity consumption, and consequential power supply instabilities; therefore, the conservation campaign’s main focus was to announce it’s new campaign: “This Summer, natural wind! 100W reduction!” a campaign designed to gather and persuade the entire nation to practice energy reductions during power peaks as well as urge citizens to take aggressive action in overcoming severe energy shortages.

Part 1 of the event discussed the fair value of the event arena’s building along with recent issues such as the regulation of air temperature and the opening of doors during air conditioning periods. Following the discussion was the induction ceremony of the “Energy Protectors” group or “Jul-JuhnJikimi”, which consists of 250 civil society members. Following the induction ceremony was the “Energy Conservation Campaign Declaration” which consisted of the government, civil society representatives, students, and housewives. Part 2 marked the end of the event and was met with great applause as students from the Segeuru fashion Design High school performed a vibrant fashion show of articles that were reminiscent of fans.
